Most people do not shop for a plumber. They search for one at the worst possible moment, standing in a puddle, with the water shut off and a phone in their hand. That is the wrong time to be comparing companies.
If you have ever typed “plumbing company near me” or “local plumbers near me” into Google, you already know the results all look roughly the same. Every listing promises fast service, fair pricing, and expert technicians. So how do you actually tell them apart?
At Quality Plumbing, we have served Champaign, Urbana, and the surrounding communities for over 30 years. This is the checklist we would hand a friend, including the parts that do not favor us. Use it now, before you need it, and save yourself the guesswork later.
1. Confirm the License Before Anything Else
Illinois is stricter than most states about this. Plumbing licenses here are issued and regulated at the state level through the Illinois Department of Public Health, and any company working on your potable water system should be licensed and insured, full stop.
Ask directly: are your plumbers state licensed, and are you insured? A legitimate company answers immediately and without irritation. Hesitation is your answer.
This matters most on work that touches your drinking water or your gas supply. Backflow prevention testing has to be performed by a certified tester and submitted to the state, and gas line work is not a category where you want to find out afterward that your installer was uncertified.
Every technician on our team is state certified and insured. You can read more about our team and credentials on our about page.
2. Check That They Actually Serve Your Address
“Near me” results are not always near you. Larger regional outfits will happily take a call from Mahomet or Monticello and then quote a travel surcharge, or schedule you three days out because you are at the edge of their map.
Ask where their service area ends. Ours covers Champaign, Urbana, Rantoul, Tolono, Monticello, Homer, Philo, Thomasboro, Sidney, Mahomet, Ogden, Bondville, and Champaign County generally. If you are outside that, we would rather tell you than waste your afternoon.
3. Match Their Specialty to Your Actual Problem
A company that is excellent at drain cleaning is not automatically the right call for a sewage ejector pit or a commercial kitchen. Look at whether they have a real, dedicated capability for your specific issue rather than a generic services page.
For homeowners, that usually means:
- Plumbing repairs for leaks, clogs, and failures
- Water heater repair, flushing, and replacement
- Sump pumps and ejector pumps, which matter a lot in central Illinois basements
- Pipe leaks, including the hidden ones
- Fixture work on faucets, toilets, sinks, and bathtubs
If you manage a business, the requirements change. Restaurants and food service need someone who genuinely knows grease trap maintenance and code. Multi-tenant and industrial buildings need commercial water heater and commercial backflow expertise. Our full services list splits residential and commercial for exactly this reason.
4. Read the Reviews the Right Way
Star ratings are close to useless on their own. What you want is the pattern underneath them.
Skim for recurring specifics. Do reviewers mention the same technician by name? Do they describe the company solving something efficiently, or upselling? How does the company respond when something went wrong? One frustrated review answered well tells you more than fifty five-star ratings.
Watch the dates, too. Twenty glowing reviews from four years ago and nothing since usually means the crew has turned over. Our customer reviews are worth reading on those terms, not just the average.
5. Get a Real Estimate, in Writing
A quote given over the phone before anyone has seen your system is a guess. A real estimate means someone assessed the actual problem and told you what it will cost, with no obligation.
Ask what is included. Parts and labor? Disposal of the old unit? What happens if they open a wall and find something worse?
On bigger jobs the difference gets substantial. One of our customers in Urbana asked us to price a water heater against other bids with the same specs, and during the assessment we found an unused recirculation pipe that meant he did not need a full new system at all. That is what an in-person estimate buys you. If you are weighing that decision now, our post on water heater repair versus replacement walks through the warning signs.
We provide transparent, no-obligation estimates. Request a quote here.
6. Ask How They Handle Urgent Calls
Everyone advertises fast response. Ask the follow-up question: what does your dispatch actually look like?
You want to know whether calls go to a real dispatcher or an answering service, how they prioritize an active leak against a scheduled appointment, and whether the person who answers can see technician availability in real time. We run a satellite dispatch system so we can route the closest available technician instead of guessing.
For genuine emergencies, do not wait on a form. Shut off the water, then call (217) 328-5081. Our guide to finding hidden pipe leaks covers the early warning signs worth catching before they become emergencies.
7. Look for Local Ownership and Real Tenure
National dispatch platforms and lead-generation sites often rank well while subcontracting the actual work to whoever is available. You may never learn who is arriving at your house.
Locally owned companies live with their reputation. They are the ones you run into at the grocery store. Look for a physical local address, a real phone number rather than only a form, named staff, and years in the community. We have been at this in Champaign-Urbana for more than 30 years with over 80 years of combined experience on the team.
8. See Whether They Care About Preventing the Next Call
The clearest signal of a good plumbing company is slightly counterintuitive: they try to reduce how often you need them.
A technician who flushes your water heater, points out the shutoff valve you did not know about, or tells you the fixture has three good years left rather than replacing it is a company thinking about the long relationship. That is also why we publish seasonal maintenance guidance instead of only advertising repairs.
Planning a Project Instead of Fixing a Problem?
Choosing a company for planned work follows a different logic. Here you are evaluating scheduling reliability, coordination with other trades, and whether their rough-in will pass inspection the first time. Ask to see comparable completed jobs.
That applies to bathroom remodeling, kitchen remodeling, and new construction and remodel plumbing.
Seven Questions to Ask Before You Get a Service
Copy these into your phone:
- Are your plumbers state licensed and insured?
- Do you serve my address, and is there a travel charge?
- Is the estimate in writing, and what does it include?
- Who performs the work, your employees or subcontractors?
- What warranty covers parts and labor?
- How do you handle an emergency call after hours?
- Have you done this specific type of job recently?
Any company worth hiring will answer all seven without getting defensive.
